Professional Scaling and Teeth Cleaning

Dental health maintenance

A professional scale and teeth cleaning appointment should be a regular bi-annual part of your calendar. It is recommended that everyone has a professional scale and teeth cleaning appointment every 6 months to remove plaque and calculus from your teeth.

Procedure

A scaling and dental cleaning procedure aims to remove plaque and calculus from your teeth.

Plaque

Plaque is a soft, white substance which naturally builds up on your teeth. It is made up of bacteria and microbes. With correct brushing and flossing, plaque can be removed. However, many of us do not remove 100% of plaque when we brush and floss our teeth, as it may collect in hard-to-reach areas.

Calculus

Many of us know calculus as tartar, but no matter which name it goes by, it poses a risk to your dental health. It is essentially hardened plaque and can irritate your gums and later lead to tooth decay. It resembles the substance that forms on the bottom of a kettle that has not been cleaned enough. Calculus can only be removed by a dental professional.

The Procedure Itself

Scaling involves removing plaque and calculus build-up by going below the gum line and cleaning there. Your dentist will use either or both a handheld instrument or ultrasonic instrument to scale and clean your teeth.

After the clean, your dentist may apply, as we do, fluoride or tooth mousse to strengthen your teeth.

Pain and Anxiety

Going to the dentist causes many people anxiety, which is likely due to the idea of pain.

Our procedure is generally pain-free, but if you have sensitive teeth, we can offer you pain management, so you feel more at ease. If you have a personal or family history of gum disease or scale and calculus build up, we can discuss more frequent cleans to prevent inflammation and the onset or progression of gum disease.

Teeth Cleaning Results

Scaling and teeth cleaning will give you clean, brighter and healthy teeth. Engaging in regular professional teeth cleaning will improve your overall oral health and also help prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

Costs

If you have private health cover, you will most likely be entitled to a free scale and clean every 6 months, so be sure to check out your policy prior to booking in.

We can also discuss payment options and plans with you if need be.

Types of Teeth Cleaning

There are several types of dental cleaning your dentist can offer. These include:

  • Regular cleaning, which simply involves a check-up and clean.
  • Deep cleaning, which is recommended for those who have sensitive teeth or gum disease. A deep clean involves the re-movement of calculus.
  • Deep cleaning and root planing, which is recommended for those with gum disease that a deep clean will not help solely on its own.
