Is Dental Bonding All You Need for Perfect Teeth?

Many people are unhappy with their teeth because of minor imperfections such as discolouration, chipping or cracks, small gaps, or the overall shape

If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because you thought you couldn’t afford costly dental treatments to fix your smile, there’s good news. Dental bonding can restore your smile without the big price tag and it’s fast and less invasive than other treatments.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding, also known as composite veneers, is the best option if your teeth have chips or are broken, too stained or discoloured for a whitening treatment to be effective, have gaps between them, or they’re an unusual shape.

The composite resin can also be used for tooth-coloured fillings, and to protect exposed roots when the gums recede too far.

Dental bonding is the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental treatment, and the results are virtually undetectable as the resin is matched to the colour of your existing teeth.

How Dental Bonding Works

Unlike porcelain veneers, dental bonding usually needs little preparation of the tooth surface, and can be done in one appointment, with no anaesthetic unless the tooth needs to be drilled in the case of a resin filling.

The resin is matched as closely as possible to the natural colour of your teeth using a colour chart.

Your dentist will roughen the tooth surface for better adhesion of the resin, apply a liquid to help the dental resin bond with the tooth structure, and then apply several thin layers of the resin until strong, protective coating is created.

Before the resin dries and hardens it is shaped to achieve a smooth and natural look.

An ultraviolet light is used to harden the resin, and then it’s shaped more (if necessary), and polished to look like your natural enamel.

It can take around an hour to complete one tooth, so if you have several teeth that require treatment, you may need to schedule additional appointments.

Disadvantages and Aftercare

While dental bonding is strong, it can still be chipped and broken by chewing on hard things such as ice or the end of your pen.

How long the treatment lasts will depend on how careful you are with your oral hygiene and habits. Generally, dental bonding lasts several years before you’ll need to go back for repairs and touch-ups.

The resin can stain easily in the first couple of days after treatment so avoid coffee, tea, red wine and other food and drinks that could affect it.
